A new year lies in front of us. And with it, new dreams and resolutions – one of which must be good food and great health! Being one of my favourite Superfoods from back home- ‘Black Rice’ aka Forbidden Rice, I am super excited to share its versatility and more food applications. Grown through consistent efforts of farmers & entrepreneurs, this product has its own unique story of beliefs, dreams and ambition that are often lost in the struggle of survival. A completely natural and GMO free product, both Poireiton and Amubi varieties of Black Rice are top on the list of over 200 varieties grown here - they are the yummiest and healthiest!

Why Forbidden? During the days of the Ching and Ming Dynasties, Forbidden Rice was exclusively reserved for the Chinese Emperors to ensure their longevity and good health. Eventually, the common man was allowed to consume this rice. Since then, it has become a nourishing staple that is reputed to promote long life and good health. Widely consumed in Asian countries, Black Rice has grown in popularity across the world and used as key ingredient in both savory dishes and desserts.

This one’s a real Super-Food! Black Rice has been culturally and traditionally grown in Manipur as one of the indigenous produce of the state, locally called as ‘Chakhao’ (with a silent k). Natural black pigment has all the health benefits, power packed with antioxidants called Anthocyanins (even higher than those found in blueberries) - a complete detox mantra. It is my go-to food for controlling those between meal cravings as dietary fibre keeps you full for longer and helps in weight loss. Another amazing property of Black Rice is natural compound present - C3G (Cyanidin-3-Glucoside), that helps balance blood sugar level and draws upon existing body fat.

It is lower on calories but higher in protein content as compared to white rice. A good source of iron, vitamins, calcium, magnesium, zinc and many other nutrients, it lowers the risk of diabetes, cancer, heart disease and obesity.

Where to get it from? FOR8 is a passion project about 8 sibling states of North East India – the seven sisters and eighth brother Sikkim. It is a group of young folks with a common dream, led by Mudita Akoijam, all working towards a common goal - to bring you the purest natural produce from this pristine region some of them call home :) “Every day spent here would remind us of the secret wonders hidden in ancient ingredients and used in soul satisfying treats for the taste buds,” says Mudita. “These indigenous products are packed with health benefits and miraculous properties. Our mission is to support and create a sustainable livelihood for the inhabitants of this largely unexplored region,” she adds.  FOR8 team is mostly on the move, travelling in the mountains for the most aromatic cup of coffee, or journeying through forests in search of rare herbs. With this motivation and drive, Mudita has started a journey to the North East hoping to add like-minded people as she marches ahead.
